    The best Half Moon Bay surfing is just a half-mile off the coast at Titans of Mavericks. This world-famous break invites elite surfers to test their limits with its 50-foot waves and giant winter swells across the Pacific. Since the 1990s, this surfing spot has become the epicenter of big wave surfing.

    Mavericks is a surfing location in northern California outside Pillar Point Harbor, just north of the town of Half Moon Bay at the village of Princeton-by-the-Sea. After a strong winter storm in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can routinely crest at over 25 ft (8 m) and top out at over 60 ft (18 m).

    Surfers Beach

    Surfers Beach is just outside the rock jetty that protects Pillar Point Harbor across Highway 1 from the community of El Granada, north of Half Moon Bay. This location under the right conditions creates a nice surf break as it rolls in along the jetty.

    Dunes Beach

    Short steep sandy trails take you down to the beach through the dunes on the bluff. South of the beach access the beach is below sandstone bluffs and north of the access are the beach’s namesake dunes. The Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail runs north-south behind the parking lot for running, walking, and biking.

    0.8 Miles | 3 Minutes Drive

    Manhattan Beach

    Manhattan Beach is located below the Ritz-Carlton bluffs. You will need to walk about 3/4 mile south to the concrete stairs going down the bluff. If the tide is out you can sometimes keep walking north to Redondo Beach, Wavecrest Beach and even Poplar Beach and south to Cowell beach; however, be careful because the tide can quickly come back in and cut off beach access.

    Cowell Ranch Beach & Trails

    Two secluded pocket beaches are approached from a parking lot on Highway 1 via a half-mile trail that leads to bluffs over-looking the beaches. The section of coastal trail known as Cowell-Purisima Trail is approximately 3.6 miles long and is open for public hiking and cycling only on weekend days and federal holidays.

The Reserve is set aside to protect this complex but fragile community for us and future generations. Be sure to check the tide before going.

    One of the largest mainland breeding colonies in the world for the northern elephant seal is at Afio Nuevo State Park. Elephant seals can be observed here year round either on a docent lead tour or through a self-guided permit system within the Wildlife Viewing Area.     Purissima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve is located on the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains overlooking Half Moon Bay. The centerpiece of this 5,412-acre preserve is Purissima Creek Canyon, with its towering redwoods, rushing creek, and understory of ferns, berries, and wildflowers. Magnificent views of the coast and Half Moon Bay are visible from the northern part of the preserve.
